Music, sound effects and sounds from the neighbourhood give shape to Lina Bautista’s ‘contamination’ session, iN RESiDENCE at the Institut Escola Trinitat Nova secondary school

If there is an essential element in the students’ creation process at the Institut Escola Trinitat Nova secondary school, it is sound. This year, the secondary school participates in iN RESiDENCE for the third consecutive time, and it is the hand of the Colombian artist and specialist in the art of sounds, Lina Bautista.

On 7 February, the participants from the 3rd-year student group conducted its ‘contamination’ session at the school. The students presented the state of their creation process, which revolves around sound. Thus, the group showed the teaching staff a series of stations corresponding to the various practice sessions that they have been carrying out since September.

For example, at the secondary school’s entrance a station was set up dedicated to synaesthesia, to represent the connection between various artistic languages. In this case, painting and music. Through a small sample, the teaching staff found out about some examples of connections that arose from the songs chosen by the students, and their corresponding abstract representations of what each piece of music conveyed to the student.

Another featured station was the screening of animated videos that the group put sound to, based on sound effects and pieces they had recorded themselves. To produce the sounds, the group studied the video they were working on, identified possible sounds to incorporate and which went well with the story. Then, with the help of a professional recorder, they recorded sounds of everyday objects, sound effects, and specific sounds from the neighbourhood to give shape to the video.

It was these sound recorders that shaped a participation activity aimed at sharing the creation process with the teaching staff. This game concluded a ‘contamination’ session directed by the students themselves, Lina Bautista and Carlos Junquera, the teacher of reference for this residence.
