David Proto IN RESiDENCE at the School Bernat Metge
davidproto.netDavid Proto (Barcelona, 1984) is a visual artist, graphic designer and social-network engineer. He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and did a Masters in artistic production and research (Barcelona).
His work moves between contemporary artistic practices, hacktivism, hypermedia development and collaboration networks as tools for social transformation. The projects he develops question the various ways of exercising power, control or oppression, and all of their derivative conflicts. He develops various strategies and alternatives that create interferences in the dominant narrative and interruptions in the official explanation of the world.
Proto is a member of the enmedio.info art and activism group, who explore the transformational potential of images and narratives, creating non-violent, direct-action interventions.
He gives lectures and workshops in universities on artivism and disruptive technologies. He is currently organising a workshop on apptivism where mobile applications are created collectively, focusing on the resolution of social conflicts.
He runs Memetro.net, an international network for creative and guerilla disobedience in communications that focuses on the right to freedom of movement.
Since 2017, he has run the Creativechain Foundation, (creaproject.io) an organisation that develops technologies distributed on open-source software, collective creation, cryptoeconomy and liquid democracy, for the creation of decentralised creative communities.
He has exhibited his work in various Barcelona museums, galleries and festivals, including Arts Santa Mònica, La Virreina, Sala d’Art Jove, Liminal GR and LOOP Festival, as well as internationally in the Museum of Arte Útil (Eindhoven), Clock Tower (New York) and the Neue Gallery (Innsbruck, Austria), among others.
