Elena Blesa and Todo por la Praxis IN RESiDENCE at the School Joan Salvat-Papasseit
The purpose of this residency programme is to collectively build a device to use (in a festive way), into the public space of Barceloneta, a neighbourhood affected by tourism and gentrification. This would allow students to recover street space found in the areas surrounding the school.
Our starting point is the work that Todo por la Praxis and Elena Blesa have been doing since 2020 regarding the messages that occupy the streets including both oral and textual ones; and on how they represent a social and political story from the context that certain neighbourhoods experience. For this new project we intend to incorporate sound and music to give continuity to this research and the production of the work. In this regard, music will be addressed as a place where students can express themselves freely and as a space of collectivisation and a tension point in the public space.
The territorial scope to be worked in will be Barceloneta, the space that surrounds the educational centre and the Rambla Sud and Raval Sud axis, as spaces of continuity, thus promoting greater openness and dialogue with the neighbourhood.
Methodologically speaking, we will seek to generate a process of collective creation based on negotiation and critical pedagogy, setting up an active working team with teachers and students. We want to activate collaborative practice as a way of constructing knowledge, which will be built from the different ways of doing things that make what we all want to learn visible.
In addition, the connection with the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA in its Spanish acronym) is important to us, not only from possibly becoming familiar with its exhibition or archive content which, of course, we will visit at some point during the project, but also to review whether there is stored material from other projects that can be reused for this residency programme, resulting in a logical reduction and reuse of materials.
