Isabel Banal IN RESiDENCE at the School Barcelona - Congrés

LOADED FIGURES

Isabel Banal presents the motif on which the pupils will reflect over the course of the residence: loads. They begin by drawing what this idea inspires in them, and then look for loaded figures in newspapers and magazines.

REPRODUCING LOADED FIGURES

After discussing some of Isabel Banal’s works in which she uses miniature loaded figures, the pupils explore reproduction using Nativity scene moulds.

PHOTOGRAPHING LOADED PEOPLE

The pupils and Isabel Banal visit the market and surrounding area, photographing people they see in the street carrying different loads.

VISIT TO THE FIRA DE SANTA LLÚCIA CHRISTMAS FAIR

At Saint Lucy’s Fair, the pupils discover the world of Nativity scene figurines and talk to some of the stall-holders.

START OF THE FIRST PIECE: CHOOSING A FIGURE

Isabel Banal shows her notebooks, in which she has collected loaded figures for years, cutting them out and sticking them on the pages. Each pupil chooses one.

CREATING STORIES FROM FIGURES

Each pupil creates a story based on what the loaded figure they have chosen suggests to them. They all compose diptychs from texts and their figure against a white background. The title of the piece will be Amb fons blanc [With a White Background].

PAINTING FIGURINES

One of the key aspects of the work that they are creating is work in miniature. To practice the techniques involved, each pupil paints a figure, given to them by Isabel Banal.

VISIT TO MACBA

The team at MACBA and Isabel Banal design a specific tour of the exhibition Volum! with detailed commentary on the works on show, linking them to the creative process developed as part of the residence.

PRESENTATION OF THE WORK AMB FONS BLANC [WITH A WHITE BACKGROUND]

Isabel Banal, the teacher Laia Mercadé and the pupils taking part in the residence present the first piece they have made: Amb fons blanc [With a White Background], a series of diptychs that form a meditation on loaded figures. The presentation is attended by pupils and teachers on the History of Art baccalaureate course and representatives from the institutions involved.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING THE SECOND WORK BEGINS

Isabel Banal invites the pupils to choose an object used to carry a load that they have at home. Everyone brings in one such object: a bag, a suitcase, a backpack… They study these objects and draw them in full detail.

MEASURING AND MAKING MODELS

They measure the load-bearing objects chosen. Then they make 1:5 scale models of them in white plasticine.

CARVING BEGINS

Taking their inspiration from Michelangelo when he made sculpture emerge from stone and the carving of huge blocks of Carrara marble, the pupils and Isabel Banal begin to carve, in plaster, the load objects that each has chosen.
