Josep Pedrals IN RESiDENCE at the School Poeta Maragall
First exercises
At the start of the residency, Josep Pedrals presents the material the group will work with: the spoken word. For this reason, over several weeks, small groups are organised to experiment with language games, jabber, selections of words… Next, these same groups create small poems that are transferred to other, eminently visual forms of expression: video clips, actions, movements...
Recitals by Eduard Carmona
Over the academic year, several poets are invited to read their own work and texts by other authors at the school. These recitals take place in the school auditorium for the pupils taking part in the residency. After each recital, a discussion begins with the guest in order to discover their working processing, aspects that attracted the pupils' attention, questions and so on. In the case of Eduard Carmona, the selection of poems is based on long, narrative texts that tell stories, an unusual feature that the pupils comment on particularly during the subsequent discussion.
Writing, relaxing, breathing
Language games are alternated with writing short texts, as well as bodily posture and relaxation exercises. Several sessions are organised outside the school, on the roof and at the theatre in order to experiment with different spaces. On each different occasion, each different space, different dynamics take place, combining work in small groups and by the whole group and the pooling of results.
Music and the text
The musicality of the text is something that the group works on throughout the creative process, attempting to link music and text. As part of this process, the pupils work on texts written by musicians and music is composed for texts written by the pupils. The group also takes part in improvisation exercises to the sound the music. The guitar provides the guiding thread in several sessions and for this reason is later included as an element in the final piece.
Recital Jaume C. Pons Alorda
At the recital by Jaume C. Pons Alorda, particular emphasis is placed on diction, intonation, volume in reading the texts. The event is highly participative: the poet recites his texts, which the pupils then repeat, in order to observe the different ways in which it is possible to recite a text and the different effects that these generate.
The pupils create their own texts: introduction to writing
Based on a highly specific proposal, the group begins to define the theme of the work for the recital: description of a feeling. Several sessions are devoted to working on precise descriptions, detail and vocabulary search. Josep Pedrals reads the pupils' texts and they are passed back and forth at different times and in different directions, as a result of which most of the pieces are written by four hands. The texts are ordered and the various sections of the recital are decided, as if they were different parts of a speech.
The stage and the posture for reciting a text
The group work on body movement and posture on stage at different times during the course. They also attend a session led by Jordi Oriol at CaixaForum to continue and build on the work they are doing at the school with Josep Pedrals. After this point, the sessions always take place at the school auditorium so that the pupils can work on the concepts of the stage, movement, lighting, position of the body, etc.
Recital Mireia Calafell
International Poetry Festival at the Palau de la Música
The final recital on the programme links up directly with the work that the pupils been doing: precise, intimate descriptions of feelings and emotions. The recital also encourages the group think about the times and reasons for the need to write to emerge, and this idea generates a variety of reflections. Mireia Calafell becomes a reference point that the group meets up with once more at her recital at the que Palau de la Música as part of the Poetry Week festival.
Designing the recital: first rehearsals
Once the written texts are ready, the group begins to research each different part of the recital. A script is drawn up, comprising several acts, and the pupils work on this shared document, which changes from session to session. At the same time, the voices for the beginning of the show are recorded, musicians are found, etc. Several sessions are devoted to the presentation on stage of what they have written on paper.
Rehearsals at La Seca Espai Brossa
A series of long rehearsal sessions take place at La Seca, the theatre that will provide the venue for the final presentation. During these sessions, in cooperation with the stage technician, the pupils organise their entrances and exits, microphone movements, music and lighting. It is during the course of these final rehearsals that the final form of the show takes shape. Subsequently, several people (teachers, people linked to La Seca or to Josep Pedrals and so on) attend different moments during rehearsals to give the pupils feedback and advice.
Presentation at La Seca
The final presentation takes place at La Seca Espai Brossa. The group performs the show to an audience of family, friends, teachers and people linked to the world of culture. At the end of the performance, the pupils and Josep Pedrals describe the creative process and engage in a question and answer discussion with spectators.
