Juliane Heinemann IN RESiDENCE at the School Milà i Fontanals
OBSERVATION EXERCISES AROUND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
In different sessions, the artist proposes observation exercises that take place outside, in different areas of the neighbourhood: from the space in front of the school to the square where the MACBA is located. The students take photos and write texts that try to capture scenes of loneliness or create hypothetical conversations or thoughts of the pedestrians. The aim is to capture emotions underlying the objective reality.
SMALL STAGE
In order to overcome their nerves, and also to overcome the distance imposed by the face masks, the idea of a ‘small stage’ is proposed. A space for expression within the classroom, in an open mike format, where students can sing or express themselves creatively in a spontaneous manner. This will be one of the first steppingstones to make headway in the creative process, taking into account that the group is fairly reticent about putting on a performance.
WE VISIT THE ’INTERNET FLAGS’ EXHIBITION
We visit the “Internet Flags” exhibition by Irma Marco in the Gràcia district. This display has some elements linked to the artist’s residence for the 2020-21 academic year at Institut Montjuïc. She tells us about the creation process with the students and accompanies us for a walk around the neighbourhood, where some of her works are on display.
CREATIONS ABOUT WINTER
Based on a series of expression exercises about the feelings brought about by winter, the students put together a small collage which has music, texts and a drawing. The driving force behind the creation is a piano melody provided by two students. This small work will be recorded on video and projected during the mash-up session with the teaching staff.
INSPIRATIONAL WORKSHOPS (MARIONETTES, CYANOTYPING)
Two workshops are carried out within a very short period of time that will have a significant impact on the final process of “Between worlds”, to the extent that new ways of expression are proposed that the students will make their own. One is a workshop for creating marionettes with Laura Guiteras and the other, cyanotyping with Lucía Olalla.
3 , 2 , 1 … ACTION!
The artist and the students conceive the four pieces that will form part of the final work, which will be in video format. When they are properly profiled and completed it will be time to record them. With the assistance of the audio-visual producer, Marc Parramon, the images are recorded which will form the video clip ‘We are’, as well as the piece produced with the marionettes ‘A new world’.
PRESENTATION OF “BETWEEN WORLDS” AT THE SALA FÈNIX
On 7 June, the public presentation of “Between worlds” took place over two sessions at the Sala Fènix in the Raval district. The audiovisual pieces screened combine sound, music, creative writing, theatre, body expression and visual art. The screening was accompanied by an explanation given by the artist and the students about the creation process of each small work. In addition to the representatives of the various institutions that promote creators in residence and parents, there was a noticeable presence of the students’ friends and classmates in the theatre.
RELATED ACTION: CONCERT AT THE AUDITORIUM, BLIND EYES (11/05/21)
The students see the show Blind Eyes at the Barcelona Auditorium. A piece for children created by the musician Arnau Obiols, with Juliane on guitar.
