Laia Estruch IN RESiDENCE at the School Juan Manuel Zafra
laiaestruch.comLaia Estruch (Barcelona, 1981) holds a degree in Fine Art from the University of Barcelona and completed part of her studies at The Cooper Union University (New York, 2010). Her practice revolves around performance, in which she works with the voice as the raw material, the architecture, the device and the space for experimentation in her art pieces. In her work, she develops strategies that make audible, through the voice, text or graphic content from different archives, or creates new ones based, composing scores and recording the sound generated when they are turned into oral form. Her work explores the systems of signs in oral language and the human interaction entailed by creating critical, performative pieces based on the uses and accidents of the voice.
Her most outstanding projects include: Serendipity, Arts visuals 2011 (Sala d’Art Jove, Generalitat de Catalunya), Jingle (Espai Cub, BCN Producció 2011, La Capella), and En lloc d'actuar fabulo, a delocated project presented at La Villarroel (BCN Producció 2012). She has presented projects at MACBA, at Rita McBride’s Blind Dates (Barcelona, 2012), Fabra i Coats (This is not an Art Show, Either, Barcelona, 2012-13), Demolden Video Project (Santander, 2013), JuneFirst Gallery (Berlin, 2014), Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Interval. Accions sonores (Barcelona 2014-2015), Galeria Sis, /fu:d/ (Sabadell, 2015), Centro Párraga, Disfonías (Murcia, 2016), Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona, 2016), Arts Santa Mònica, Segueixi els rastres com si fos miop, Art Jove 2006-2016 (Barcelona, 2016). She took part in the Magnet Schools project within the framework of the MACBA education programme, working with two schools: Escola Josep Maria de Segarra and Institut Moisès Broggi (2015). She has also led workshops for teachers and the general public under the MACBA education programme (2016). Her work can be found in private and public collections, including the Banc Sabadell Collection, Fundació Palau de Caldes d'Estrac Art Centre Collection and the Patrim Collection, conserved by the University of Barcelona Art Faculty.

The Institut Juan Manuel Zafra (Camp de l’Arpa del Clot, Sant Martí) was founded in 1892 as an arts and crafts school. It is now a publicly-run school that offers compulsory and sixth-form secondary education to pupils in the El Clot catchment area and which supports the inclusion of contemporary creation in the classroom.
