Luz Broto IN RESiDENCE at the School Doctor Puigvert
A Day without Teachers
Un dia sense profess [A Day without Teachers]
45-minute recording
Un dia sense profes [A Day without Teachers] is the film that resulted from the video recording of the process prior to carrying out an action. This document details the way in which the pupils discussed, persuaded and organised all members of the education community at Institut Doctor Puigvert secondary school to carry out the performance Un dia sense profess [A Day without Teachers]. Over the course of many sessions and meetings with the rest of the education community, the pupils discussed their ideas about authority, the management of time and their own ability to organise themselves, finally proposing to create a space for the experience they planned within the context of the school itself.
The residency process generated a meditation on limits: firstly, about physical limits and the spaces in the neighbourhood, and, secondly, about limits within the school, authority, the management of time and organisation at the education facility. The question that the pupils posed, “Can we go for a day without authority?”, was put to the rest of the education community in order to spark a process of collective thought and discussion about the possibility of carrying out the action.
Presentation
The presentation of the residency took place at 7 pm on June 21 at the Fabra i Coats Art Factory. First, two of the participating pupils briefly described the residency in order to explain the context of the film presented. Next, the film itself was shown, followed by an intense, emotive discussion with the audience about the proposal and the entire process that took place over the course. The pupils participating in the residency, the teacher Mercè Gaja and the artist Luz Broto discussed and answered all the questions raised by the audience.
The presentation was attended by pupils, teachers and relatives, as well as representatives from ICUB and Barcelona Education Consortium and people linked to the world of culture.
