MANS O IN RESiDENCE at the School Escola el Til·ler
RHYTHMIC EXERCISES
A series of group games are played during the first sessions that focus on rhythm and improvisation. These are two very important musical concepts for an artist and these exercises break the ice with the group. Many students are familiar with the different musical forms of flamenco (called “Palos” in Spanish) and its rhythms, so these are fun exercises.
INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Mans O’s primordial language is electronic. In order to get the students used to some of his usual tools, he brings a sampler, some mixing tables and different effects pedals into the classroom. In turns, the students explore and try out different possibilities and uses of these elements in the construction of a musical creation.
SYNAESTHETIC EXPERIMENTS
To investigate the connections between artistic disciplines and to expand the sensory threshold of the students, a synaesthetic exercise is proposed. This comprises experimenting with colours, shapes, materials, rhythms, sounds, etc., finding inspiration in different natural elements (air, water and fire). The synaesthetic element will play a larger role in the final section of the residence and the presentation.
STORYBOARD AND FILMING
Once the plot that will be the common theme of the final work is well-defined, the process begins during which the students will visually portray the different scenes through a storyboard. Filming the scenes takes place in different areas of the school. An audiovisual creation will be constructed from these videos, based on visual loops and rhythmic editing, which will be projected during the final presentation.
REHEARSALS AT FABRA I COATS
The day before the presentation, all instruments and scenery elements are unloaded at Fabra i Coats. The group meets Jorge Albuerne’s class, who they will be sharing the stage with for an In Residence double bill. The following day the group practices the musical accompaniment to the audiovisual creation, as well as the different interventions that will take place during the presentation.
JOINT PRESENTATION BEFORE THE PUBLIC
On 1 June, Fàbrica Fabra i Coats presents ‘Dreaming in loops and adventures’, a double bill by In Residence, which also includes the presentation of GEST(o), by Jorge Albuerne. The presentation combines the simultaneous projection of different videos, in synchrony with pre-recorded music and live improvised music. Many parents from both schools come to Fabra i Coats.
LINK WITH THE RESIDENCE OF JORGE ALBUERNE
Given that the two schools are from the Sant Andreu district and they both had plans to put on their presentations at the Fàbrica Fabra i Coats around the same dates, both residences were combined to form a joint stage event. Both on the day of the presentation and the day before, the groups of students got to know each other and adjusted the transition between the two works. It was a very enriching experience and it made perfect sense to combine two nearby schools (but in some respects quite distant), making two different artistic disciplines come together into a single central theme: the Creators In Residence programme.
Period at Fabra i Coats
The group was able to spend two days at Fabra i Coats to get to know the space better, to become acquainted with the Marti Pou group and participate in the setting up and sound tests for the presentation. This was a key aspect in the successful execution of the work.
