Martina Manyà IN RESiDENCE at the School Josep Serrat i Bonastre

Martina Manyà ( Barcelona, 1983)

I'm a visual artist with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona.

Although painting is my main activity, my work also involves other media and techniques such as illustration, engraving, posters and, more recently, textiles.

Colour, as a means of expression, fascinates me, and consequently form and matter, all of which are inseparable elements.

My artistic practice contains a large component of experimentation and research, regarding the form as well as the materiality of the artistic work, a fact that leads me to reflect on the materials used, their origin, their qualities and their possibilities. I often make my own paintings from natural or ecological pigments, trying to minimise waste, which I attempt to transform or include in my work.

The process and experiential aspect is very important in my work, creating from the experience of doing, in an intuitive flow between head, hands, body and heart, but not necessarily in that order.

I went to Lisbon in 2006 to do my Erasmus, where I have lived for 11 years. I currently live in Barcelona and continue to have a strong bond with the country both on a personal and professional level.

My work has been exhibited in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Lisbon and Setúbal. I have published several children's books, a comic and 2 artist's books. I have worked as a visual artist for the Nit dels Museus 2024, for the Mostra de Films de Dones (2018-2021), the Festival LEM and for many concerts and events (regularly for ZDB in Lisbon, among others).

I am currently on a creative period at Casa Aymat, developing the set design for the new show of the Portuguese dancer Sara Anjo and in the process of creating a solo exhibition.

This is the third time Serrat i Bonastre (Sant Gervasi, Barcelona) has taken part in IN RESiDENCE. Previously, Domènec (2015-2016) and Toni Giró (2016-2017) were the artists in residence, with the mediation of A Bao A Qu. This year, they are participating with a group of 4th year secondary school students.

The Josep Serrat i Bonastre School has a long educational tradition with more than 130 years of history. It has stood in the current building since 1918. Throughout its existence, it has been known by various names, but since 1952 it has been called what it is today, in homage to the mechanical and chemical engineer and great propagator of technical terms, Josep Serrat i Bonastre.
