Nora Ancarola (Buenos Aires, 1955) has lived and worked in Barcelona since 1978 and holds a BA in Fine Art awarded by the Universitat de Barcelona. Since 1998, she has been doing studies and residencies on audiovisual techniques, processes and expressions and the theory and practices of contemporary art at the UBA in Buenos Aires, the Kulturfabrikken in Copenhagen, the Evmaros Art Gallery in Athens and in Rome and Barcelona.
“As time has passed, my work has become increasingly closely connected with two aspects of reality that I am particularly concerned about: the ability of artistic languages to contribute new readings to the small – or big – stories of history and social reality, plus the observation and use of creative processes and their potential for managing individual and systemic unease as an instrument of transformation.
“With these two considerations in mind, I have produced paintings, photographs, videos and installations in which the images bring the private and the public into play with the clear intention of rethinking the status that governs them. Each project requires a different process and at the same time demands a specific technical, processual and spatial resolution. Placing the image and the text in a dialogue is a recurrent feature of my work since my early days.”
Trilogia de la privadesa, a joint project with Marga Ximénez involving more than 50 professional collaborators, Optimització combinatòria, with Ulla Blanca Llima, and Polititzacions del malestar, with Laia Manonelles and Daniel Gasol, also demonstrate the increasing importance in her work of shared endeavours and their social and political dimension.
Ancarola is currently working on Temps de plom i plata. Derives obligades, which she is developing as micro stories. Other projects she is pursuing at the moment include Habitatges de la seda, La caseta dels alemanys, Banyuls Portbou_Muga 600 and Espais de plata (with Agnès Wo).
