Pep Vidal IN RESiDENCE at the School Escola Trinitat Nova
(A) Darkroom, to see the light of the world.
The darkroom consists of a completely blacked-out room with a small hole in one of the walls. All external light can only come through this small hole. The image looks exactly like what is outside except that it would be upside down and vice versa! How can we know that we are upside down if we are looking at the blue sky and clouds? What does an upside-down cloud look like?
At the same time, the darkroom can be a place to be with oneself, in solitude, and at the same time be able to see the world around us. It is a cross between a hut and an observatory. Can we observe the clouds and at the same time be on earth? Can we observe the world around us and at the same time be in solitude? Yes, with the darkroom.
A shelter. A hut. A motorhome. An observatory.
What would your darkroom look like? Mobile? Large? Small? What do you want to observe? Where do you want to put it? Who would you invite? What materials is it made of? “Pinhole” cameras! Cyanotypes (maybe also talk about it).
