Ricardo Pérez-Hita IN RESiDENCE at the School Verdaguer

We begin a new and unusual In Residence course and we visit el Born

We ask the question: Why have you signed up to this group of CREATORS IN RESIDENCE? There are only three vocational education students on the first day. On the second day we worked on words and gestures from the summer, we debated and spoke about what Covid was and about being together during that time. Afterwards, we went on a guided tour of El Born CCM.

First session with the creator

On 8 October we were all together for the first time. We walked from Institut Verdaguer to El Born CCM, and we introduced ourselves along the streets where we live and those where we had lived, through images that represent us and the music that we most like.

Wandering around the neighbourhood

We went for a walk and discovered the neighbourhood and its people. We walked around with the sensation that the people saw us as tourists or a group of teenagers on a school trip. And with the sensation of seeing ourselves as a group and not a community, a strange and divided group.

Getting involved in #FotoBarri

Intervention at the archives of #FotoBarri, a Casal Pou initiative. We re-took photographs of the same streets with our mobile phones. And we visited the same places using Google Maps. Using these relationships between the photographs of the past and present, the students freely created based on what these original relationships transmitted.

Protocols and group work

The final sessions before the Christmas holidays were dedicated to proposing a positive protocol, agreeing on a work tool that would help us work together. This task was first done in groups, where they had to answer a few questions. The responses of the different groups were shared and there was a debate which allowed us to reflect on respect and insult, the educational institution and its limits.

Visit to “Right to a healthy city and surroundings”

We visited the exhibition “Right to a healthy city and surroundings: Practices situated around community culture and health”. A session where we spoke, under the guidance of the mediator Javier Rodrigo, on the right to the city, shared health, treatments and interdependencies, neighbourhood decline, community remedies, to debate on other forms of practising situated arts and internet art.

Wandering around Pou, Forat and Negra

We make a video over two sessions at Casal Pou de la Figuera which helped us get to better understand the history of the square, the origins of the cultural centre, and how it helps the neighbourhood. We first went for a stroll around the square and we prepared an intervention in the public space by performing small artistic actions.

Design of the final project

Now that we were sure about our lines of interest, based on the disillusionment generated by looking back on compulsory education, a few months before completing this educational stage. We want a space where we can share our knowledge, all of us are specialists in something associated with culture, and wanted to share it on a horizontal basis.

SUBVERSION!

Creation of a fanzine based on the visit to the SUBVERSION! exhibitionat El Born CCM, which we saw just before the Christmas holidays. The pieces guided us through several conversations based on disparate questions, collages and postal art which resulted in a fanzine.

Presentation of “A never-ending conversation”

Our project culminated in a presentation which went from Institut Verdaguer to El Born CCM, where the formalisation of the procecss could be seen. The presentation ended up in the street, in front of the centre, where the conversations between the students, parents, friends, etc., continued.
