Tom Carr IN RESiDENCE at the School Sant Andreu
THOUGHT ABOUT WRITING
Tom Carr proposes that the central theme of the residence should be the beauty and communicative effectiveness of short quotations and texts through their formalisation in writing. Everyone writes a phrase that they like, paying attention to their handwriting.
EPITAPHS
For All Saints, an exhibition of epitaphs is organised at the school. As this is a subject linked to the theme of research for the residence, the pupils visit the cemetery in Sant Andreu and gather a number of epitaphs. Later, each pupils writes one, choosing the phrases and typeface and composition on the page.
CREATING ALPHABETS: SHADOW ALPHABET
Several alphabets are created over the course of the residence. The first is formed by projecting hand shadows.
CREATING ALPHABETS: LIGHT ALPHABET
Another alphabet is created, this time using beams of light.
THINGS THAT LETTERS DO
Over the course of several weeks, the pupils and Tom Carr perform actions to draw letters, punctuations signs and icons, firstly using objects, then with their bodies and shadows.

VISIT TO MACBA (VOLUM!)
The MACBA team and Tom Carr design a specific tour of the exhibition Volum! and a detailed commentary on the works in this show, linking them to the creative process that is being developed as part of the residence.
ACTION AT MACBA
Before the visit, the group makes a question mark using their feet, seen thanks to the transparency of parts of the museum floor.
START OF THE COOPERATION WITH THE BARCELONA POESIA POETRY FESTIVAL
At La Virreina, the pupils and Tom Carr meet the organisers of Barcelona Poesia. Over the following weeks, they work with texts by some of the guest writers at the 2012 festival. They also create actions to be performed during the festival.
PER QUÈ [WHY]
At the traditional celebration of the Mascletà at Institut Sant Andreu, a large action is organised in the playground: nearly four hundred pupils from all courses form the words per què [why].
